Why does it send Text messages (SMS) from my phone?
If you don’t have mobile data or Wi-Fi connection, it sends your check-in to the server as a coded text message. Like Morse code.
Do I need cell reception / mobile coverage?
You need at least 1 bar. You don’t need data. Anywhere you can send a text, you can send an SNS check-in. If you’ve got Starlink, you can do this anywhere.
Should I still have a Personal Locator Beacon?
SafeNotSafe is not a replacement for a PLB.
Will this drain my battery?
SafeNotSafe is carefully built to use only a tiny amount of battery. When you’re not using SNS, turn off GPS, enable flight mode and power saver. Then it should last for a long time.

How SafeNotSafe Sends Messages
+ SafeNotSafe is built to work where normal apps can’t.

+ By default it uses data (internet) if your phone has it turned on.

+ If no data is available, it automatically falls back to SMS text messages, so you can still check-in with only weak satellite or cell signal.
+ This “SMS backbone” is why SafeNotSafe can work in the most remote places.
Costs
+ Free in most cases: If you’re in the USA, Canada, or New Zealand with a local SIM, check-ins are free — SafeNotSafe covers the SMS cost on our toll-free numbers.

+ Normal text charges: In the UK and Australia, you’ll pay your usual SMS rate (whatever your mobile plan charges for sending a text).

+ Other countries or roaming: Your carrier may charge international SMS rates.

+ Your phone may show a warning that sending a message “may cause charges.” If you’re in USA/Canada/NZ with a local SIM, you can ignore this warning — your check-ins are free.

+ We ask for your SIM/country at setup so we can route your check-ins to the best number and keep costs as low as possible.
Quick Check-In (The Fast Way)
+ Once you’ve set up your contacts, the fastest way to check-in is with a long press on the pulsing button.

This instantly repeats your last check-in:
* Same Emergency Contact
* Same Safe/Not Safe choice
* Same “Moving” or “Resting” status

+ Perfect for quick daily check-ins — in and out in under 5 seconds.
Standard Check-In (If Things Change)
+ Tap the pulsing button.

+ Pick: Safe or Not Safe.

+ Pick: Moving or Resting (to tell your contact if you’re stopping or carrying on).

+ Choose which Emergency Contact to notify.

+ Press Send.
Pre-Trip Heads-Up (Optional)
+ Send trip details before you leave:

* Track name
* Dates and times
* Car location and description
* Planned overnight stops

+ Helps your Emergency Contact know what to expect, and when.
During-Trip Heads-Up (Optional)
+ Use this if your plans change while you’re out.

+ A Heads-Up lets your Emergency Contact know about changes — like staying an extra night or taking a different route.

+ This way, they get the update on a map (just like your check-ins), keeping all trip info in the same place.
History (Pulses)
+ See all your previous check-ins and heads-ups.

+ Useful for remembering when you last checked in.
Emergency Contacts (ECs)
+ Your ECs receive check-ins by email.

+ They don’t need to install anything or create an account.

+ They can opt-out anytime.
Troubleshooting
+ Check-in didn’t send → Retry later.

+ No GPS location in email → Wait longer or move to clearer sky before retrying.

+ Contact didn’t get invite → Ask them to check their spam folder.

+ Unexpected SMS charges → Check if you’re roaming or using a SIM outside USA/Canada/NZ.
Safety Reminder
+ SafeNotSafe does not replace a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).

+ Always carry standard safety equipment.

+ If you are in danger, mark “Not Safe” — your Emergency Contact will know something is wrong.
